Arizona fall-winter vegetables

November 2018
The Farms Choice Newsletter

Happy Thanksgiving from the Hickman and The Farms Choice Family to yours!!

What a great month to live in the desert southwest. Harvest time is upon us or nearing completion of cotton, chilis, and many others. New alfalfa is sprouting. Rye grass has come up in yards and on the golf courses and its fresh new mowings are a beautiful sight. Winter vegetable season is now in full swing and our area is once again the “salad bowl” of the world. We have so many things to be thankful for and we’re especially thankful for you and your support of our business!

Rousseau Farming Company

The members of the Rousseau family have been putting food on the tables of Arizona families since 1892 and more than 120 years later are still committed to providing Arizonans with fresh, healthy and locally grown produce.

Will RousseauWill Rousseau, the owner of Rousseau Farming Company®, is a fourth generation Salt River Valley farmer. His maternal great grandfather, Charles Pendergast, came to Phoenix in 1878 working on a grain harvesting crew. He put down roots here and the Rousseaus now own several thousand acres. L. D. Rousseau, Will’s paternal great grandfather, arrived in Phoenix in a covered wagon in 1892. He and his wife eventually bought land in west Phoenix and made a life for themselves and their family.

Will’s father, Bill Rousseau, was primarily involved in the cattle business with a feed lot in West Phoenix that he operated until 1980. Will graduated from the University of Arizona in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. He worked with Bill for two years before starting his own operation. By 1986, Will was farming 1,700 acres of row crops before experimenting with 40 acres of carrots.

Today Rousseau Farming Company® consists of 9,000 acres, of which more than 70 percent are vegetable production with the core crops being carrots, broccoli, cabbage, mixed greens, celery, onions, sweet corn and watermelons. More than 1,100 acres are dedicated to organic farming methods. The operation is vertically integrated with its own harvesting equipment, trucking, cooling, icing and shipping facilities. The facilities are state of the art and include a carrot packing plant that packs baby peeled carrots as well as cello packed whole carrots. The majority of the produce is distributed to local grocery chains, restaurants and supermarkets such as Walmart and Costco in Arizona and other states.

We are pleased and honored to have The Rousseau Farming Company® as a Farms Choice Partner! Visit their website at www.rousseaufarming.com. Their commitment to growing organically and to maintaining high standards of safety and freshness are unparalleled and they are truly an Arizona treasure.

November Garden To-Do List

To Do

This is still the best time to plant trees, shrubs, and vines in the desert southwest. Warm days and nice cool nights are a great combination for establishing roots and diminishing stress on new plants.

Cool season vegetables and flowers -- the time of year we’ve waited for is here! Anything you can eat the leaf, root, or part of the stem of can be planted now and for several months ahead. As for you flower lovers -- it’s almost easier to list what you can’t plant. Enjoy geraniums, pansies, petunias, lobelia, alyssum, dianthus and so much more! Regardless of what you’re planting, we encourage you to do as Chris Neal has done to use The Farms Choice compost to prepare all your planting beds and holes. You’ll be glad you did!

Roses -- if you haven’t already, remove any summer damage and fertilize with The Farms Choice 4-2-2 fertilizer pellets. Late fall roses can be and usually are the best flowers of the season!

Winter lawns -- now that they’re up and growing, be sure to fertilize with The Farms Choice Turf Pellets. Keep that winter grass growing and green before the first frost comes. If neglected, even winter rye grass can yellow out and be stubborn to regrow in cold weather.

Enjoy this most beautiful time of the year in our part of the world and your time with friends and family during the upcoming holidays. We’re thankful for you and your support of The Farms Choice line of natural fertilizer products.

Happy Thanksgiving and
good growin’!

The Farms Choice came about because of our ability to see a win-win solution when it came to a steady supply of a natural byproduct of egg ranching. Eggs require hens, and hens create a lot of waste as part of their daily routine. Their steady supply of a potentially useful resource was the beginning of a way for everybody to benefit.
