snow in Arizona

Early Spring 2019
The Farms Choice Newsletter

What a difference a year makes! Last year at this time, we had seen virtually no rain or mountain snow and temps were well on their way to mid or late spring levels. Just this past week, snow fell in measurable amounts down below the 2,000 ft. mark, and since October the Valley has received close to 10 inches of precipitation in some areas. This late fall and winter moisture will make the desert a beautiful thing to behold in a few weeks, help turf grass vitality, and make spring gardens and crops grow like crazy.

The team at The Farms Choice hopes you’ll get out and participate in this most beautiful time of the year. Remember, folks from the upper Midwest spend thousands to come here and soak it in. You can do it for FREE! Of course we’d like you to buy a little fertilizer and make it an even greener spring!

The changing path of the sun, longer days, and warming temperatures are the perfect recipe for growing almost anything from turf grasses to alfalfa to shade trees. Golf courses are beginning to prepare for the transition from cool season to warm season grasses, and the green-up of non-over seeded areas of the course. Our friends up north are preparing for their turf grasses to begin to grow and turn green.

This “transition” time is perfect for the application and introduction of organic material and fertilizers like The Farms Choice. By the way homeowners, you need to begin to transition out your cool season grasses in the next few weeks as well. We see far too many lawns where the ryegrass has been allowed to live nearly all summer and by late July or early August, when the cool season grass finally dies, there is no warm season lawn left at all. Begin to reduce mowing heights weekly, dethatch, and aerify to help this process along.

citrus blossomsWhen you smell spring coming in (citrus blossoms) you know it’s time to fertilize and plant fruit trees. Whether it’s citrus or summer ripening fruits like peaches apricots and plums, it’s time to plant. In the last few years “tropical” fruits have become more popular here in the low desert. Mangos, papayas, bananas, and more can be found in specialty nurseries throughout the Valley. For these warm weather lovers, frost protection and finding a warm protected spot to plant them is the key as even during a warm winter damage can occur to these true tropicals. The Farms Choice 4-2-2 fertilizer pellets are ideal for new plantings or on existing/mature fruit trees of all types. Be sure to feed the trees that feed you. Our citrus, avocado, grape, pecan, and date farmers are busy fertilizing and preparing their trees for the upcoming growing season. You should be, too!

Arizona Hot Princess RoseSpeaking of smell -- roses are in all their glory now. If you have them in your garden, you should be enjoying the “flowers” of your labor. Roses are heavy feeders, especially when in heavy blooming periods. Our 4-2-2 pellets are a perfect way to give the plant a long, slow, even supply of nutrients -- which helps the plant not only bloom but put on vital new growth before the heat of summer comes on. Don’t feel left out. Now is a great time to plant new rose bushes as well. Be sure to amend your soil with organic material like our organic compost, gypsum, and or soil sulfur.

Spring is certainly a time of change and transition for cool season to warm in all of farming and gardening. The leafy green season is about to come to an end in the desert, and melons and grains are taking their place. And alfalfa? Well, it never really slowed down in some places this winter and is really starting to crank. Cotton planting is just around the corner.

For the backyard garden, remember the warm season veggies are the ones that generally produce a fruit that can be picked off the plant. (Remember that in the cool season, we ate the leaf, root, or part of the plant.) You should be well underway planting squash, melons, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, peppers, and tomatoes.

Don’t forget the chicken!!!! The pros don’t!

Whitfill Nursery

Family-owned and operated Whitfill Nursery is a plant and tree farm that has helped make Arizona landscapes beautiful since 1946.

Whitfill’s locally grown plants are a Valley tradition, and Whitfill’s extensive knowledge of landscaping in the desert Southwest is legendary. Owner Brian Blake, his family, and other Whitfill family members continue the legacy begun long ago.

The heritage of Whitfill Nursery is derived from founder Leslie E. Whitfill and his wife Floris' ability to make effective use of what resources were available to them. After arriving in Phoenix from Lubbock, Texas in their Model-T Ford, the Whitfills created a homestead in 1928. Whitfill Nursery began as a citrus tree business that grew from a parcel of land on Glendale Avenue in 1943 only a short distance from what would become Whitfill's longest standing nursery location. Les Whitfill, who had embarked on a career as a chef that would last 30 years, developed the citrus tree business as a side enterprise.

Mr. Whitfill developed Whitfill Nursery into a full-time business that he leased out in the 1950s. With the participation of children, grandchildren and their spouses, Whitfill Nursery became a true family effort. In 1973, Mr. Whitfill and his grandson, current owner Brian Blake, assumed full control of the business. Their partnership expanded to include multiple locations. In 1979, Mr. Whitfill turned the plant nursery business over to his grandson, who continues the grower tradition.

Leslie E. Whitfill passed away in 1996 at age 87, leaving behind a proud heritage that is continued by his children and grandchildren today.

The Farms Choice is part of Whitfill’s growing plan for their organic Meyer lemons, which are available at a variety of local grocery stores, including Sprouts. Whitfill also sells The Farms Choice products to retail customers at their three Valley locations.

The Farms Choice came about because of our ability to see a win-win solution when it came to a steady supply of a natural byproduct of egg ranching. Eggs require hens, and hens create a lot of waste as part of their daily routine. Their steady supply of a potentially useful resource was the beginning of a way for everybody to benefit.
